Panasonic LUMIX S1 & S1R Review

In this post, we are reviewing Panasonic LUMIX S1R and S1. The Panasonic LUMIX S1 is, of course, the first full-frame mirrorless camera along with the LUMIX S1R from Panasonic.

The Panasonic LUMIX S1 actually they’re both photo-centric cameras. But the Panasonic LUMIX S1 is a little bit more tilted in the video direction whereas the Panasonic LUMIX S1R is a bit more of a photo-centric camera.

Both cameras feature a full-frame sensor. They also use the L mount system which was previously established by Leica.

Body

Going around the body we have a couple of interesting things to talk about. First off this is optional but there’s an attachment for the eyepiece that is fully articulated rotatable has a bayonet connector so if you’re left a shooter you can actually get the best of both worlds.

Panasonic S line is fully weather sealed, it’s dustproof, water-resistant and also has been able to withstand up to -10°C.

On the side, you’ll see there are two card slots one of which is SD the other is XQD. I know some people are going to be very thrilled about that one.

In the body of course is Dual I.S.2 it is back. You get six stops of stabilization when combined with an optically stabilized L mount lens.

There’s a new battery for the Panasonic LUMIX S1 and Panasonic LUMIX S1R along with a new DMW-BGS1R battery grip.

Also returning from the Panasonic LUMIX G9 is the top status LCD. The LCD stays on by the way even when the cameras off. So you always get your readout of remaining photos and battery life even through the grip.

I’m very happy to tell you that this is actually the highest resolution EVF in any mirrorless camera this is a 5.7 million dot EVF OLED of course so it is a pleasure to look through.

Photography Features

We’ve got two new cameras. Now, what’s cool about them so the Panasonic LUMIX S1 is a 24.2 megapixels camera the Panasonic LUMIX S1R is a 47.3 megapixels camera.

Panasonic LUMIX S1R has a new high-resolution mode built into it. This camera natively shoots at 47.3 megapixels but in the high-resolution mode in the Panasonic S1R will shoot a raw image at 187 megapixels. What it’s doing is actually tilt shifting eight separate exposures to combine one super high-resolution image. This is very convenient for creating extremely large prints and super-high depth of field and crazy resolution.

This camera shoots at 9 fps on AFS and 6 fps on AFC. It’s also got 6K photo mode which will shoot 30 frames a second and spit out 18-megapixels stills. It also has 4K photo mode which will shoot 60 frames a second and give you 8-megapixel stills.

The electronic shutter goes up to 1/8000 of a second on Panasonic LUMIX S1 and goes up to 1/16000 of a second on Panasonic LUMIX S1R.

The camera also has a new AI recognition. Which will detect animals and human bodies but also eyeballs if you’re shooting portraits or something like that. Also boasts a very high flash sync speed at one three hundred and twentieth of a second that little extra goes a really long way.

Inside all Panasonic Lumix cameras, we have a built-in intervalometer that basically tells your camera when to take a picture and how often to take a picture so that you can build it into a time-lapse or a stop animation.

I think it’s really important to get the image right in the camera so you have less time post-processing. A really cool new feature in the Panasonic S line is you can boost the shadows, increase the highlights or vice versa. It’s really nice to get your image perfectly curved correctly before you even take the shot and that way you’ve got a lot less time on the computer and more time to shoot.

For those of you who have used the Panasonic LUMIX G9 you’ll probably be familiar with something called high-resolution mode. That still exists in Panasonic LUMIX S1 and Panasonic LUMIX S1R uses the sensor to create an ultra high-resolution image. This time there’s something called motion blur correction involved. Now the Panasonic LUMIX S1 goes up to 96 megapixels while the Panasonic LUMIX S1R goes up to 187 megapixels.

Video Features

Both the Panasonic LUMIX S1 and the Panasonic LUMIX S1R are do record 4K video but the story is a little bit more complicated than that.

These are both photo-centric cameras first and foremost but if you are looking into the video features the Panasonic LUMIX S1 is probably the one you’re gonna want to look at. Because up to 4K 30p there’s no recording limits and 4K 60p does have a 30 minute recording limit with Panasonic LUMIX S1. On the other hand, the Panasonic LUMIX S1R has a recording limit in 4k up to only 15 minutes and in high speed mode, there’s a 10 minute limit. Both of the cameras do record the standard 8-bit formats right out of the box. But the Panasonic LUMIX S1R will not record 10-bit the Panasonic LUMIX S1 however will have HDR HEVC 10-bit as it’s mandated by HDR spec.

V-log will also be available as a separate purchase for the Panasonic LUMIX S1 only. But the nice thing about this version is that it is the Full V-log.

Final video difference in the Panasonic LUMIX S1 and Panasonic LUMIX S1R is about sensor readout. Now in most modes up to 30P you have full sensor readout on the Panasonic LUMIX S1 when you go to 60P at 4k you drop to APS-C crop. On the Panasonic LUMIX S1R you do actually have a full frame readout even at 4k 60.

New mount means new lenses. It’s really awesome that Panasonic has come together with Sigma and Leica to create the L mount in the new full-frame mirrorless system. At launch is coming out with three lenses;

Within the calendar year, Panasonic will release ten lenses including the these three lenses.
